More than 50,000 UK residents made travel arrangements through Goldtrail only to find that their trips were canceled. Travelers reacted with anger and disbelief. What’s worse is that thousands of families have been left stranded at airports and hotels across Europe. Some travelers were asked to pay for their hotel rooms again or else they risk being arrested. Because Goldtrail was a discount travel agency, many of their clients come from low income households. After paying for a vacation months in advance, the majority of Goldtrail customers don’t have the cash or credit available to pay for their trips again.
Travelers have already asked if they will be reimbursed for their out of pocket fees, but so far, top level executives at Goldtrail have been eerily quiet. While many vacations have been utterly ruined, others face more serious consequences. Goldtrail offered vacation packages to countries such as Greece and Turkey. It is not clear whether or not the travel agency actually paid for airline tickets and hotel reservations as agreed or if their funding was pulled. In either case, travelers will have to make alternative plans.
Some airport and hotels have agreed to help the stranded travelers. Other travelers are reportedly calling home to ask relatives to lend them money. It is unlikely that any of the stranded passengers will be prosecuted for Goldtrail’s shortcomings, but in the meantime vacationers are becoming frantic. Because of Goldtrail’s checkered past, many consumers have been avoiding booking vacation packages through them for more than 18 months.
